What better way to test an expedition vehicle than by driving it to one of the coldest places in Europe?
Every vehicle we build is designed for adventure, but there's only one way to truly discover how well a system performs—and that's by putting it to the test.
This winter, we took our 1983 Mercedes Unimog on its maiden expedition to the Arctic Circle. The journey would take us through Germany, the Netherlands and Sweden before crossing into the Arctic, where freezing temperatures, heavy snowfall and unpredictable conditions would push both the vehicle and ourselves to the limit.
As with any expedition, not everything went to plan...
Every Adventure Starts Before the Destination
Leaving Adventure Van Life HQ in Winchester, we knew we had an incredible journey ahead of us.
Our goal wasn't simply to reach the Arctic Circle—it was to begin proving the capability of a vehicle designed for true off-grid exploration.
Like any 40-year-old expedition vehicle, we expected a few challenges along the way.
What we didn't expect was for the first one to happen quite so soon.
When Things Don't Go to Plan
While travelling through Germany, we discovered an issue with the Unimog's clutch hydraulics.
For many travellers, a mechanical issue at the beginning of a long expedition could be enough to end the trip.
Instead, we adjusted our plans and headed to a specialist Unimog workshop in the Netherlands.
One of the biggest lessons from overlanding is that flexibility is just as important as preparation.
Sometimes an unexpected stop becomes one of the highlights of the journey.
Discovering Dutch Hospitality
Although the repair wasn't part of the itinerary, it gave us the opportunity to experience a side of the Netherlands we hadn't planned for.
Snow-covered landscapes, welcoming cafés, beautiful waterside accommodation and some incredibly friendly locals turned what could have been a frustrating delay into an enjoyable few days.
It's a reminder that the best travel experiences are often the ones you never planned.
Preparing the Unimog for the Arctic
While the vehicle was in the workshop, we decided to complete a few additional upgrades.
The team carried out:
- Clutch hydraulic repairs
- New hydraulic hose installation
- Wheel alignment
- Brand-new tyres
With everything completed, the Unimog felt better than ever and ready for the thousands of miles still ahead.
Heading North
Once back on the road, the scenery began to change dramatically.
As we travelled through Sweden, snow became deeper, temperatures dropped, and the roads became increasingly remote.
Fuel stations looked very different to those back home, with heated water points designed to keep facilities operating throughout winter.
The further north we travelled, the more obvious it became that this was a very different environment from anything we'd experienced in the UK.
Life Off-Grid in Winter
One of the biggest advantages of travelling in an expedition vehicle is the freedom to stop almost anywhere.
Throughout the journey, we enjoyed some spectacular overnight locations beside frozen rivers and snow-covered forests.
Even in sub-zero temperatures, the Unimog remained warm and comfortable thanks to its carefully designed heating system.
Reliable heating transforms winter camping from something you endure into something you genuinely enjoy.
Testing Our Heating Systems
This trip wasn't just an adventure—it was also a real-world test of the systems we've installed.
The Unimog is equipped with multiple AUTOTERM heating systems designed specifically for cold-weather travel.
These provide:
- Comfortable cabin heating
- Continuous hot water
- Engine pre-heating
- Reliable operation in extreme temperatures
Long periods of winter travel are the perfect opportunity to evaluate how every component performs outside the workshop.
There's no better testing ground than the Arctic.
Winter Driving Requires Respect
As we approached the Arctic Circle, weather conditions became increasingly challenging.
Heavy snowfall quickly turned into a complete whiteout.
Visibility dropped to just a few metres, forcing us to pull over and wait for conditions to improve.
It's an important reminder that no matter how capable your vehicle is, good judgement is your most valuable piece of equipment.
Sometimes the safest decision is simply to stop.
A Lesson in Snow Driving
Not long after continuing our journey, we found ourselves recovering the Unimog after slipping off the edge of the road.
Fortunately, thanks to the vehicle's stability and the professionalism of the local recovery teams, the incident ended safely.
It also reinforced an important lesson.
Even experienced drivers can be caught out in Arctic conditions.
Snow-covered roads often hide their true edges, and a moment's misjudgement is all it takes.
The experience reminded us that expedition travel is about managing risk, learning from mistakes and respecting the environment you're travelling through.
Finally Reaching the Arctic Circle
After thousands of miles, challenging weather and a few unexpected setbacks, we finally crossed the Arctic Circle.
Standing beside the iconic marker, it was a proud moment.
Not because everything had gone perfectly—but because we'd overcome every obstacle the journey had thrown at us.
That's what adventure is all about.
What This Journey Taught Us
Every expedition teaches you something.
For us, this trip reinforced several important lessons:
- Preparation is everything.
- Reliable heating is essential.
- Flexibility is part of the adventure.
- Quality equipment gives confidence.
- Sometimes the unexpected moments become the best memories.
Most importantly, it confirmed that the systems we design at Adventure Van Life perform exactly as intended when they matter most.
Why We Test Our Own Builds
At Adventure Van Life, we don't just install products—we use them.
By taking our own vehicles into demanding environments, we're constantly learning how equipment performs in real-world conditions.
That knowledge feeds directly back into every customer installation we complete.
Whether you're heading to Scotland for the weekend or planning your own Arctic adventure, our goal is the same:
To build heating and electrical systems you can depend on wherever the road takes you.
